Fit Testing

Fit Testing is carried out to determine the fit of a respirator to an individual. Each individual’s facial features is unique and there is no one-mask-fits-all solution. Fit testing makes it possible for us to determine if a respirator allows individuals to work comfortably while being protected against inhaling substances that could be hazardous to their health.

Fit tests are required for tight-fitting respiratory protection, i.e. N95s (including medical N95s), half-facepiece and full-facepiece reusable respirators.

Fit test exercises include:

  • Normal breathing
  • Deep breathing
  • Turning your head from side to side
  • Nodding your head up and down
  • Reading aloud
  • Bending over

These exercises are carried out with the individual wearing a respirator. The respirator must be of the same make and model which will be used on the job. As these exercises were developed to simulate actual experiences on the job, it allows us to determine if the individual can retain a good fit while working.

Note that a fitness to work evaluation “A2 and A5 Use of respiratory protection that requires a tight seal to protect the user” must be conducted prior to first use of a respirator.

Drugs and Alcohol screening

Drugs and Alcohol screening for preemployment or any medical screening as per company requirement
